Hey! The boss needs someone to check out a water source outside town and gather some data. I can probably hold off if you want. But you do seem to be feeling better lately, and we could use the extra money. What do you think?

Annalise tried to think of a reasonable, rational response to Michael’s text. She knew that he had to do fieldwork sometimes to collect data. It was expected of him.

The only way he could get out of doing these kinds of trips forever would be if he completely shifted gears and changed his career. Annalise knew she couldn’t ask that of him. She would lose him completely if she did. She didn’t want to get in the way of his passion.

That’s fine. I know you love going out in nature and doing that kind of work. I’m feeling better lately. How long will you be gone?

She tapped her fingers against her desk, distracted. Michael had changed. Still, she couldn’t help but worry.

Just a few days. I’ll keep you updated throughout the whole trip. We’ll call, text. I can send pictures. Anything that would make you feel more comfortable.

His reassurances only made her feel like she was overreacting. She suspected that his co-workers’ wives didn’t expect all of that. She didn’t want to push him away by being too needy or clingy.

No worries. I trust you. I’ll catch up on work and maybe do some reading. It’ll be fine. I’ll be fine.

Annalise wished she felt that way. But as she tried to turn her attention back to her work, she wrestled with an unsettling feeling.

A sinister observation returned. Michael rarely left when she was depressed. He was always there to take care of her.

Annalise shook that thought away. She was getting over her depression; she wasn’t about to fake an episode just for attention. That would look suspicious anyway. He would know what she was up to.

Her thoughts turned back to the meal plan she was working on for a fellow diabetic. It was a topic that was fresh in her mind.

Among all the stress, Annalise was careful to treat her body right. If she indulged too much in sugary comfort food, her blood sugar spiked. If she neglected eating for too long, it crashed.

As Annalise worked on the meal plan, an unsettling thought distracted her. It was just a peep at first, a whisper. That whisper grew louder, though. The words were too sinister to ignore.

Annalise sat back in her chair and ran her fingers through her hair as she shook her head. She needed to say it out loud to release the poison.

“I could make myself sick,” she said, voicing thoughts she was most ashamed of. “The depression could too easily be faked. But if he sees that I’m dealing with physical symptoms, maybe he won’t be suspicious. Maybe he’ll stay.”

Annalise tapped her fingers against her desk again, getting out the restless energy. It was manipulative to use her knowledge like this. She didn’t want to be this kind of person.
